Notes: This paper adopts a socio-cultural theoretical framework to consider the ways in which language teachers construct or hinder opportunities for learning. The conclusions suggest that teachers may assist second language acquisition as much through their use of language as through their choice of method. The paper is cited widely in studies on language teacher education, school efficiency and second language acquisition.
