The paper responds to the call from Osterlund and Carlile [2005] for empirical research into the area of cross-communal relations. The focus of the study is on understanding the boundaries that arise in the process of forming a new boundary practice in a constellation of interrelated practices [Wenger, 1998]. The data, gathered from a participant observation study of a multilateral project, is analysed against Carlile’s [2004] framework for managing knowledge across boundaries. The analysis suggest that while Carlile’s model does help explain some of the findings, its reliance on the properties of knowledge in explaining boundaries prevents it from being a sufficient tool in the analysis of more dynamic contexts, where properties of situation play a significant part. The paper concludes that there is a need for developing a typology of boundaries which would take into account relational aspects of cross-communal learning and factor in the impact of emotions.
