In conjunction with the economic development, travel behavior in developing countries is becoming very complicated. Uncontrollably rising vehicle ownership and usage can be identified as the main reason for the behavioral variations in such countries that may finally create complex travel patterns. Among them, trip chaining is found as an attractive travel option for vehicle owning households in developing countries. Therefore, this study investigates household travel behavior on vehicle ownership, mode choice and trip chaining decisions in developing countries by using a nested logit (NL) approach. The developed NL model has two levels. The upper level of the nesting structure represents the choices for car owning/motorcycle owning/no vehicle owning, and the lower level illustrates the mode choice combinations for two traveler households, where car and motorcycle trip chains are appropriately included in the lower level of the nesting structure. Model is analyzed using Revealed Preference (RP) and Stated Preference (SP) data since combined RP/SP is an effective method to improve the reliability of parameter estimates. On the other hand, combined RP/SP models are very helpful in expressing complex travel behavior and forecasting travel demand for new transport services. Therefore, the objectives of the proposed model are stated as follows: • analyzing travel demand for existing modes with explicit coverage of household decisions on vehicle ownership, mode choice and trip chaining; and • forecasting travel demand for future transport proposals.
