For most finite difference models of unsteady river flows, a straight channel assumption is required due to the fact that these models solve one dimensional flow equations. In this paper, an investigation of the validity of this assumption has been carried out for a number of conditions with different channel curvatures and flow types. Two dimensional unsteady first and second order accurate models based on the finite volume method with the Osher scheme are used for the simulation of flow in straight, slightly and moderately meandering channels.
