Extractable organic matter (bitumen-2) remaining in previously-extracted whole rocks, or in kerogen concentrates that have not been thoroughly extracted after rock demineralization, can severly affect Rock-Eval data for kerogens. Appearing in the S2 rather than the S1 peak, the bitumen-2 acts to increase S2 yield. We illustrate the results from the analyses of a mature source rock from offshore Norway.
