Interviewing older people with dementia is both a rewarding and challenging research task. Yet interviewing people with dementia may only be an exemplar of the ontological and epistemological challenges facing all researchers achieving interviews with study participants. Furthermore, there can sometimes be tension between the stated aims of research (e.g., to enhance person-centered communication with people with dementia) and the realities of data collection. Using data drawn from two different studies of people with dementia we will role play extracts from selected interview transcripts, one involving an informal caregiver, to illustrate the ebb and flow of shared understanding during the interview process. We will highlight ways of interviewing people with dementia that are affirming for the participants and enhance the communication of a common understanding between researcher and study participant.
