Abstract

“Trace-Retrace” explores the potential of combinations of collage and image reproduction to form pictorial analogues of models of memory that are based on conventions of fragmented and discontinuous time. It uses a response to place as a focus for these explorations, namely to the site of the Kyoto apartment block, now demolished, in which Jones lived during his time in Japan 1987-89. The project is being carried out in two phases: March-June 2006 a series of work was made during a period of residency as Guest Artist at Kyoto Art Centre, Japan and was exhibited at the Centre’s North Gallery. The second phase is currently being undertaken in the U.K. and will lead to the exhibition of a series of reproducible collages at Northern Print, Newcastle in May 2007.
