Notes: I published a textual edition of Walter Scott, Chronicles of the Canongate, in the Edinburgh Edition of the Waverley Novels series (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2000). This is a series of what will ultimately be 30 volumes. We have an arrangement with Penguin that selected titles will be reprinted in paperback in the Penguin Classics series. I am the Advisory Editor of the Scott titles appearing in Penguin, eight of which have so far been published (1998-2003). The titles in Penguin take over the text, historical and explanatory notes and glossary from the hardback edition, and supplement it with new material appropriate for a paperback. I worked with colleagues to provide this, in particular the Chronology of Walter Scott and the template for Further Reading on Scott. In 2003 my own edition of Chronicles of the Canongate came out in the Penguin series, and for that I wrote a new critical Introduction (the hardback edition did not have such an Introduction) and a new and briefer Note on the Text to replace the extensive textual information in the hardback edition, and added further reading on Chronicles of the Canongate to the template agreed for the series as a whole.
