A consideration of the claim that writing for children encouraged young people to enlist and otherwise participate in the First World War with reference to a range of widely-read materials. This illustrated article demonstrates that such a thesis is simplistic and misrepresents the sobre and conflicted nature of much writing about war for young people in the three decades prior to the outbreak of hostilities in 1914.
