Abstract

This article explores the reasons for the establishment of the first popular film magazines in 1911. It looks at the priorities underpinning the invention of their main contents – the ‘motion picture story’ – in the United States and the reasons for creating a UK version, and relates the emergence of this most vital aspect of a new, nationally uniform, popular film culture to the transformations in the British and American film industries that occurred between 1908 and 1911.
