Abstract

This short contribution is part of a discussion section prompted by my article 'Late Hellenistic and early Roman invention and innovation: the case of lead-glazed pottery' (American Journal of Archaeology, 2007). It addresses comments and criticisms offered by archaeologists and philologists published in the same section, and uses them to reinforce rather than modify my original interpretation.
