Notes: Using the test coupon proposed in this paper it is possible to measure material properties and characteristics at a much smaller scale than component level. This has direct relevance to structural reliability calculations in which spatial variation can be important, especially in new and sustainable composites. This work has led to the recent award of a large EPSRC joint project grant (EP/C548582/1 & EP/C548590/1).
