Abstract

Funded by WIOMSA (Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association), this practical guide contains all the information you need to be able to identify whales, dolphins and dugong in East African coastal waters. Author Per Bergggren is associate professor of conservation ecology at Stockholm University, Sweden. He has been involved in marine mammal research, conservation and education in the western Indian Ocean region since 1998, and in this guide he describes the unique characteristics of 33 di erent species you may  nd in this area. With meticulously detailed drawings by Phil Coles and incredible close-up photographs taken by leading marine biologists and wildlife photographers, the guide will prove indispensable for whale and dolphin watchers, students in the region, and indeed anyone interested in these endlessly fascinating creatures.
