Abstract

Niches+ (EU DG Research 7FP) seeks to stimulate a wide debate on innovative urban transport and mobility between relevant stakeholders from different sectors and disciplines across the EU and accession countries. Its remit is to promote the most promising new concepts, initiatives and projects from their current “niche” position to a “mainstream” urban transport policy application. Moreover, it looks into the specific needs and expectations of users and implementers, while exploring the potential for transferability of concepts to adopting cities or regions. The project directly involves seven local and regional authorities (named Champion Cities) to develop implementation scenarios that integrate one or more innovative concepts with existing urban transport policies. One of the Champion Cities is Cork, Ireland. This paper will report on Cork’s progress towards achieving its Niches+ objectives in conjunction with its underlying policy objectives. It will demonstrate how Cork intends to facilitate the provision of an integrated transport system, catering for the expansion in population and employment in the city and hinterland, and how it seeks to enhance environmental quality and encourage a reduction of emissions in line with standards and national policies.
