Abstract

This paper aims to measure farm-specific technical efficiency in the England and Wales dairy sector in the post-quota period using Milk Marketing Board data for a sample of dairy farms over the period 1984/85-1986/87. In contrast to a recent study by Dawson, we estimate one measure of enduring technical efficiency for each farm over the 3 years. The results show that there is a large spread of efficiencies but, in general, there is a high degree of efficiency. However, it is argued that improvements in the general level of efficiency are unlikely because of constraints imposed on production by quotas.
