Geneva drives suffer from inherent shock as a consequence of the geometry of the mechanism. The authors propse a modification to the basic geometry, using a drive pin with a non-circular cross section and slightly tapered slots in the Geneva wheel, which reduces the shock loading thereby making the mechanism suitable for high speed applications. By the application of well-established C.A.D. techniques to define the profile of the drive pin, a cycloidal indexing motion is achieved in which acceleration is zero at the beginning and end of the indexing cycle.
