The general concept of a ""process"" has become increasingly important both as a tool for gaining an understanding of complex computer systems, and as a basis for organizing their design. This has occured despite the lack of general agreement on a definition of the concept. The present paper provides a framework for the definition and extended discussion of processes and techniques for structuring them. It uses the concept to unify a variety of hardware ans software tools and methodologies.
