An experiment is described in which the performance characteristics of two dissimilar pieces of hardware are compared using almost identical software. The performance of a set of batch-orientated jobs was measured while running on one machine with dynamic relocation, and on another with a conventional addressing mechanism, with almost identical operating systems in each case. A simple model is described which models the performance of the two systems approximately, and is used to predict the performance ained by increasing the amount of immediate access memory.
