The paper describes the experience of the preparation and use of a programmed instruction text to teach an Anglol-like programming language, ALGOLW, in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Though the original motivation for its development was a need to teach a new language to those already familiar with programming, the text has been found useful in more general situations, including introductory teaching. A statistical evaluation of these aspects of the performance of the text is given. Comment is also made concerning the conveniant automation of certain aspects of the preparation of the text.
