Multi-level Debugging Using Interface Monitoring

Abstract

An approach to debugging is presented which attempts to unify many of the currently employed techniques for debugging both hardware and software systems. The technique of interface monitoring is introduced and it is shown by a small example that the same technique may be applied at all levels of a system, both software and hardware. It is also shown to be possible to provide a single point of monitoring which, by suitable tools for interpreting the results of the monitoring, can be used to aid debugging at each of the levels. The use of the technique in systems of concurrent processes and in distributed systems is also discussed.
