A Multicast Transmission of Taxonomy

Abstract

In this paper we present a taxonomy that can be used to compare different methods of multicast transmission. The taxonomy classifies individual layers rather than entire communication systems using: a) the number of identifiers that can be associated with a message, and b) the type of identifiers required to identify the members of the multicast set. The utility of the taxonomy is demonstrated in several ways. First the taxonomy is used to classify several well known networks and distributed systems. The taxonomy is then used to describe the overheads associated with performing multicast transmissions in layered systems. Finally, we show how the taxonomy has been useful in our research into multicast communications.
