Abstract

Driving plays an important and essential role in maintaining elderly people’s mobility and independent living, enabling them to participate in their usual social activities and carry out practical day-to-day needs. Having to give up driving can lead to reduced mobility, lack of freedom, loss of independence, unmet social needs, lower quality of life and eventually depression and isolation. This paper explores how elderly people use their car, what are the effects on their driving abilities due to age-related functional decline, and whether they have used any in-vehicle system to help them overcome some of the driving difficulties.
