Coaching is constantly enriched by new theoretical perspectives on the field. This theoretical paper draws on the storytelling literature of the social sciences and organisation studies to offer new perspectives on coaching theory and practice. Its central arguments are: 1) a narrative way of knowing may enhance coaches’ sense-making and analysis skills; and 2) active and purposive storytelling may increase the effectiveness of the interaction between coach and client. The conclusion is that narrative and storytelling can enhance the coach’s grasp of the coaching relationship and their practice; however, coaches need to be aware of the pitfalls associated with the use of narrative and storytelling in coaching.
