The background and experiences of using ship design software and, latterly, Tribon Initial Design in teaching undergraduate ship design at Newcastle University School of Marine Science and Technology is described. The strategies adopted to allow the software to become sufficiently 'student friendly' for use in a teaching context are discussed to, it is hoped, benefit others involved with the teaching of ship design and using similar software to support student project work.
