Abstract

The focus of this paper is on the involvement of children and young people in participatory action research as researchers rather than merely subjects in and of research, with a particular reference to the discipline of education within the United Kingdom. In the UK, there has been an increasing focus on outcomes, content and delivery, and the ‘voice’ of teachers and pupils has largely been ignored and unheard. This review paper outlines the philosophy and characteristics of participatory research, including the issues of power and empowerment, alongside the methodological, practical, and ethical considerations that apply to involving young participants, particularly pupils, as researchers. Projects and case studies of participatory research involving children and young people are used to highlight the potential benefits to research and the researchers themselves.
