This paper provides an overview of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001 standard and its relevance to the Italian Healthcare sector. The presentation follows the OHSAS 18001 approach of Plan, Do, Check and Act. It provides a review of policy, hazard and risk assessment in the healthcare sector. A risk management handbook for a primary care trust is provided as an example. The implementation, operation and checking clauses of OHSAS 18001 are descried. Finally the management review and conclusion is provided. Throughout the paper we mainly refer to the British National Health Service (NHS), statistics and hospitals to illustrate this as a case study.
