SOLUTIONS - Tyne and Wear Case Study Transport Modelling Work

The main objective of the SOLUTIONS research is to establish up to what extent the current spatial strategy of land use dispositions and transport configurations are sustainable. A subsidiary objective is to appraise alternative land use and transport spatial design strategies. These options can be described at one extreme as a ‘compact’ city option, where a high density/public transport oriented design is pre-eminent; at the other extreme a ‘dispersed’ city option, where a market-led/private transport oriented design is allowed, and finally, an intermediate ‘planned expansion’ option, where some dispersal is adopted in the form of growth corridors and new settlements. The work reported on in this paper describes the transport aspects of the case study options tested for the Tyne and Wear subregion. The transport related behavioural responses of the option testing, modelled using the Tyneside Area Multi-Modal Study (TAMMS) model, are presented and discussed. Further assessment of the economic, social, resource use and environmental impacts of the options is being conducted outside the remit of the work reported here by the University of Leeds.
