This book presents the crucial tenets of the strategic framework of developing firm competitiveness, which underpin: (1). Creating of Core Competence; (2). Establishment of Competitiveness Index; and (3). Competitiveness Rankings. These are closely linked with the development of corporate strategy, marketing strategy and technology and innovation strategy within firms. These core features will have strong implication to Chinese and foreign enterprises and provide invaluable instrument for firms to enhance their performance through benchmarking and evaluating their current competitiveness position and determine new strategies in creating competitiveness. The publication of China Firm Competitiveness Report will also provide an essential source of information for policy makers in designing and implementing innovation policies and economic development strategies which enable China to establish a large group of globally competitive firms. Furthermore, the purpose of publishing China Firm Competitiveness Report is to provide strategic insights and assistance to firms in China when addressing issues of competitiveness and core competence and ultimately contribute to the creation of competitiveness of their firms. The report will also provide an important source of information for firms outside China when making strategic decisions on expanding their businesses in the China market. The distinctiveness of the book lies in the examination and assessment of the operation, performance and prospects of China’s technology and innovation system. It stresses the importance of keeping-up with the fast pace of technological change and the emerging new global paradigms of the business environment. It addresses the development trajectory and the way through which firms can contribute to the capacity building and create competitive advantage in facing pressing challenges in the globalization. It establishes the potential indicators of competitiveness by analysing the theoretic elements and the microeconomic business environment. In this book, we argue that it is in the triple alliances of foreign technology and FDI, government support, and excellent performance of enterprise(s) in implementing the appropriate technology strategy that contribute to the core competitiveness of Chinese firms. The primary aim of conducting China firm competitiveness research is to apply such conceptual model and establish a practical guidance for firms to understand what their current competitive position is, hence to take the advantages of their existing strengths and enhance their performance. Creation and sustainability of competitive advantage has never been more of a challenge today. Flexibility and adaptability and the ability of both individual and organizations to learn from their experience and their competitors are now integral elements of a firm’s business strategy. Knowing what competitiveness is, an organization must learn about its internal and external relationships and build both hard and soft capacity. However, such learning must take place faster than competitors in order to achieve sustainable competitive advantages.
