This paper presents research evidence elicited from a sample of nascent female entrepreneurs who are engaged in business gestation activities. The theoretical concepts of legitimacy and self-efficacy provide the main underpinnings for this study. A mixed methodological research approach was adopted with a survey questionnaire and in-depth interviews being employed. Exploratory factor analysis and content analysis were utilised to elicit information from the data. A key finding is that many of these women are focusing most of their efforts on personal legitimising behaviours related to self development and training, as they serve to increase self-efficacy and also legitimise the business start-up. This study recognises that behaviours that lead to personal legitimacy are a pre-requisite before other forms of legitimacy can emerge.
