Stereotypes of older people are essentially negative and reinforce institutionalized ageism. Of course, such generalizations mask huge diversity; as in the rest of the population there are differences in gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic group/social class, income/pensions, regional/local cultures and household and/or family structure. This contribution considers what factors are important to older people's quality of life. A case study of a person with dementia and his carer is included to illustrate some of the key aspects of the experience of ageing in contemporary society and social aspects of ageing. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd.
