Mobile travel information services (MTIS) aim to provide comprehensive information for a trip-maker during a trip. MTIS is one of a range of services that can be delivered through Traffic Management Centres (TMC). Highly sophisticated systems and services can be deployed to suit specific objectives, including VMS for road users, at stop and on board visual information or audible information for public transport users, and information delivered direct to mobile devices. For the trip-maker the advantage of MTIS is flexibility which can contribute to the convenience of public transport travel and enhanced confidence. This paper examines the criteria for successful implementation of MTIS in urban areas with specific reference to the research carried out in the EU 7FP project NICHES+. It describes two case-studies demonstrating different approaches: Stuttgart and Trondheim.
