Wireless technologies are likely to play a significant role in delivering future intelligence to the transport sector. Connected environments could be implemented to collect and process data from fixed and mobile networks to deliver a safe, sustainable and robust future transport system. In the road transport sector such connected environments are commonly termed Cooperative Vehicle Highway Systems (CVHS). This paper provides an overview of CVHS with a more detailed description of the contribution it can make to safety applications. Wireless communications technologies are described followed by a review of selected experiments from the EU-funded EMMA, TRACKSS and SAVE ME projects.
