Notes: The Golden Space City of God investigates the cultural artefact as a carrier and shaper of group and social belief.
The research developed a creative context that allows collaborations between artist, composer, choir, choir leader, director sound designer to be the central generative dynamic of a work
The project explores and investigates how shifts between the forms and media of text, voiced text, sound, music, performance, recorded sound and video imagery and space, shape and carry meaning.
The projects starting point is the investigation of contemporary western heterodox eschatological beliefs, and in particular their expression in the electronic social spaces of the world-wide-web.
Texts describing the end of the world associated with heterodox Christian group the Family were developed into a libretto. This was the basis of an oratorio for voices written by composer Leo Chadburne. This was performed for camera by a 28 member choir assembled for the project in Texas. This became the center of a video installation using moving image, text and sculptural elements.
The work and research was developed at the International residency program at ArtPace San Antonio in 2009 and received funding from the ArtPace SanAntonio International Residency Program, The Art Council of Great Britain, the AHRC, The Elephant Trust and the Henry Moore Foundation.
The work was exhibited at Art Pace San Antonio 2009; Matts Gallery London 2009 (solo exhibition, publication); Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts Manuka, New Zealand, 2009 (solo exhibition); KunstMuseum des Kantons Argau Switzerland (solo exhibition. publication) 2010/2011; Yuill/Crowley Gallery Sydney Australia 2010 (solo exhibition); Southampton City Art Gallery 2011 (solo exhibition).
