Abstract

An assessment of the prospects of democratic socialism in the twenty-first century should include some attention to the part of the world which experienced an undemocratic form of socialism in the second half of the twentieth century. This article reviews developments in the postcommunist region since 1989 and attempts to explain the varied trajectories of postcommunist states and societies. While explicitly socialist political movements still have relatively little appeal, egalitarian attitudes suggest some potential for the future. Meanwhile democratic politics is under strain across Europe, with antidemocratic or postdemocratic tendencies observable on both sides of the former Iron Curtain.
