Abstract

Little research has investigated 'burn-out' data and to date, because hazelnut shells have been used only in simple combustion conditions, virtually no data is available about its use in other fields such as gasification. If reliable, clean, gaseous fuel can be made available, combined heat and power generation from biomass is a suitable technology to develop. In this study, we determined gasification and burn-out kinetics and we worked to develop reliable and easy-to-operate small gasifiers (10-75kW) capable of producing a continuous supply of clean gas. This gas is subsequently fed to reciprocating engines or gas turbines to generate local electric power and heat. This work suggests that small-scale gasifiers can make an important contribution to the economy of rural areas where biomass residues are abundant, and some design and operating data is provided for suitable gasifiers.
