Abstract

The demographic evolution in many countries and the increasingly aging population call for radical changes in the delivery of social and health care services. Assisted living technologies and services (ALTS) are expected to provide new avenues to allow health and social care systems to cope with these challenges, improve the quality of life of those chronically ill and frail older citizens and to aid their independent healthy living at their own homes. In this paper, based on evidence from literature and case studies we conducted, we identify current trends and main challenges in commercialisation of ALTS and develop a framework for sustainable business models for a modern assisted living technologies and services market in the digital economy.
