Abstract

Fragment 5 of the lost Alexander-historian Ephippus of Olynthus is re-interpreted as eye-witness evidence that Alexander in 324/323 BC had adopted the traditional lion-hunting style of the Persian (and before them the Assyrian) kings based on archery and chariotry, as illustrated in famous near-eastern artworks such as the Darius Seal and the Nineveh reliefs, both in the British Museum. The larger significance for Alexander's rulership of his transcontinental empire is discussed.
