Abstract

This work presents an efficient technique to reduce thebit error rate (BER) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) signals transmitted over nonlinear solid state power amplifiers(SSPA). The proposed technique is based on predicting thedistortion power that a SSPA would generate due to the nonlinearcharacteristics of such devices. In a fashion similar to the selectivemapping (SLM) or partial transmit sequence (PTS) schemes, thepredicted distortion is used to select a set of phases that minimizethe actual SSPA distortion. Simulation results have confirmed thatthe signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required to obtain BER ∼10−4 usingthe proposed technique is less by about 8 dB when it is comparedto the standard PTS utilizing 16 partitions. Moreover, complexityanalysis demonstrated that the proposed system offers a significantcomplexity reduction of about 60% when compared to state-of-theartmethods.
