Abstract

This 8,000+ word article sets out to revisit the first translation of the Communist Manifesto in the Red Republican, 1850 by Marx and Engels’ close friend Helen Macfarlane and considers the wider context in which it was published. Although its first publication date is not in doubt, my work seeks to establish that a discussion of its key concepts had been substantially aired at an earlier date in Harney’s other radical journal, the Democratic Review (1849-50), thus helping to prepare the ground for the better understanding of the Manifesto among radical circles.
