Exploring Uncertainty of Delays as a Factor in End-to-End Cloud Response Time

Abstract

This paper reports our experience in benchmarkinga cloud-based web-service and investigates instability of itsperformance and the delays induced by the communicationmedium when measured from multiple client locations. Wecompare the performance of MS Azure, GoGrid and an in-houseserver running the same benchmark web service and analyse howthe client and service implementation technologies affect itsperformance. The uncertainty discovered in the network delayaffects the overall performance and dependability of cloudcomputing provisioning and requires specific resiliencetechniques.
