Notes: The formulation of models for predicting the dispersal of contaminants released into natural river systems poses many problems. This work, which combines laboratory based experiments with fundamental model development and evaluation, addresses some of these issues: A range of experimental studies were performed to provide a large database for model calibration and validation. An important transport mechanism (dead-zone advection) was identified and incorporated into the modelling. A major output from the studies is the demonstrated effectiveness of the modelling approach for treating contaminant dispersal in channel flows with complex bed geometries characteristic of many natural water systems.
