Abstract

The paper presents a study of older (60+) and younger (30-60) drivers to examine how a range of Intelligent Speed Control (ISC) systems, with differing levels of interventions, could be effective in reducing the incidents of speeding on roads with speed limits of 20,30 and 40 mph. The study utilised focus groups and questionnaires to assess drivers attitudes and difficulties in adhering to legal speed limits and a driving simulator-based study to observe driving and speeding performance under different driving scenarios and with ISC’s with different levels of interventions from: Advisory, through Differential, to Mandatory. Analysis of the results indicate that both the older and younger age groups maintained speed limits well with both the Advisory ISC and Mandatory ISC systems over the hybrid differential ISC whilst post trial questionnaires have found that a significant proportion of older drivers expressed an interest in purchasing a Mandatory ISC system.

Notes: Research funded under the UKRC £12m SiDE Digital Economy Hub (EP/G066019/1) which has developed unique facilities for researching older drivers (Simulator, DriveLab and Highly Instrumented Vehicle). Industry has shown significant interest in supporting the research and a new collaboration with the AA has been developed (Contact Edmund King, President of AA, Tel. 07738791052). Significant media interest in research area and outputs including Sky News (http://tyneandwear.sky.com/news/article/18600) and BBC Breakfast News (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-17785033). EU project VERITAS and EPSRC Project ‘Helping Older Drivers continue driving safer for longer’ (EP/K037579/1) have been funded to support further research in the area of technologies for older drivers.
