Abstract

The research intention of the ‘Replica’ project was to use architectural construction processes to engage directly with the historical and spatial parameters of two European city squares, Piazza Oberdan in Milan (Italy) and Martelarenplein in Leuven (Belgium). The project engaged with discourses exploring the relationship between public art and architecture; uses of public spaces; and the interaction between artist, participant and audience. ‘Replica’ consisted of two different temporary time-based site-specific architectural scale installations, both constructed and presented in 2008. Construction of the work was sponsored by UK and Italian construction companies (r.Bau Ltd, Layher and Gasbeton). The Belgium work, ‘Slapende Meermin’ was commissioned by STUK Kunstencentrum and presented as part of STUKSTART (2008). Over five days a rotated full-scale replica of a façade of a 19th century building on Martelarenplein was constructed and de-constructed in the middle of the square, appearing for a short-time as a physical manifestation of the building’s shadow. In contrast the Italian work, ‘Le terme’, created a dialogue with a hidden architectural site, Diurno Venezea, a derelict subterranean 1920’s public bathhouse buried beneath the piazza. Over twelve days a section of Diurno Venezea, was constructed and de-constructed above the original site, at no point becoming fully visible. ‘La Terme’ was co-funded by Galleria Ciocca Arte Contemporanea and Arts Council England. Collaborators included Politecnico di Milano, ASSAB-One Milan and Spazio Oberdan. The installation featured prominently on Ultra Fragola Web TV Channel and in a full-page article in La Repubblica (16/10/2008, p.14). Long exposure photographs of the two works were shown contemporaneously with the installations and in subsequent exhibitions: · Wolfgang Weileder, Projects 2002-2008, (solo show), ASSAB One, Milan, 2008· Le Terme e La Sirena, (solo show), Ciocca Arte Contemporanea, Milan, 2009 · ‘To The Demon King’s Castle, of course’, Workplace Gallery, Gateshead, UK, 2009.
