Multi-Agent System (MAS) has a potential of modeling autonomous decision making entities for solving complex problems. Each agent pursue its own goals and takes actions by recognizing its environment through communication with the other agents. At the same time, security and reliable electric power supply is an important requirement of modern power systems. Instead of building large electric power grids and high capacity transmission lines, an intelligent microgrid can be considered as a promising alternative power supply. This paper presents a design and implementation of a MAS in the context of a distributed smart grid at a distribution level. An intelligent MAS for an integrated microgrid was designed and implemented according to FIPA standards. A control scheme was implemented on MAS to operate the integrated microgrid by optimizing the local production from each microgrids and power exchange among microgrids and the main grid. Simulation studies were carried out on the developed MAS and the outcome of simulations demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed MAS for implementing smart grid techniques in distributed environments.
