Abstract

Following the presentation of Newcastle University’s new flowcell facility in the AMT’09 conference and the presentation of the first aging/polishing rate flume design in AMT’11, this paper presents a combined facility that integrates the above two devices into one robust hull coating efficiency measurement device. This new device is designed for long-term exposure of the coated surfaces in realistic seawater flow conditions to cater for the aging, polishing and foul release testing of biocidal and non-biocidal fouling control coatings. The main feature of this facility is that the testing section is divided into two subsections: the first that is mainly used for skin friction measurements as well as aging of fouling control coatings; and the second that is used for aging only. The device is also suitable for assessing the adhesion strength of microfouling grown on foul release coatings. The main advantage of this flume is that the fully developed and turbulent flow regime across the test coating surfaces can be directly related to the flow around a ship’s underwater hull. A standardized testing plate, which has been designed to use in the new high-speed insert of the Emerson Cavitation Tunnel for the performance of boundary layer experiments, will be used in this facility. This plate can also be used to produce fouling growth samples in either static or dynamic conditions as well as all surface roughness measurements of the coatings to be tested. Overall the new multipurpose flume, presented in this paper, provides a useful tool for the evaluation of biocidal and non-biocidal fouling control coatings
