Material travel distance is a key indicator of the efficiency of internal logistics. An effective layout minimises material flow cost. Solving facility layout problems (FLP) involves determining the optimal placement of machines within a fixed space. Changes in customer demand may alter the material flow. Periodically redesigning the layout can reduce the material flow cost. However, there is a trade-off between material flow and reorganisation costs. This paper proposes a new modified Backtracking Search Algorithm (mBSA) that solves the FLP over multiple time periods with demand uncertainty. The combination of material flow and shifting costs are minimised. The mBSA performance was benchmarked against the classical BSA and the Genetic Algorithm (GA) using eleven benchmark datasets. The total costs associated with the layouts obtained by the mBSA were significantly lower than for the conventional BSA. The mBSA computational time was up to 50% less than the GA with similar quality solutions.
