The ‘internationalised’ university is one of the most interesting arenas for intercultural communication research. This paper reports on a mixed-methods study investigating how higher education (HE) staff and students understand, experience and envision ‘internationalisation at home’ (IaH) and ‘global citizenship’. Although there is a burgeoning literature on the experiences of internationally-mobile HE students and staff, relatively little is known about how the non-mobile majority understand and experience internationalisation (Mason and Eva, 2014). As it is becoming increasingly clear that international mobility is not in itself a panacea for universities seeking to graduate interculturally competent ‘global citizens’, IaH is gradually moving to the top of HE internationalisation agendas in the UK and elsewhere. However, while notions such as ‘educating global citizens’ and ‘international perspectives’ are increasingly ubiquitous in policy documents, little is known about how students and staff on the ground perceive and experience these concepts. Data was collected at one British university through focus groups, with both ‘home’ and ‘international’ staff and students, and through an online survey. Findings suggest that students and staff experience IaH in diverse and nuanced ways. Additionally, participants put forward a number of ways in which global perspectives may be incorporated into learning, teaching, and staff development activities. We put forward a research agenda, and a set of recommendations that can inform discussions on how all HE students and staff, whether internationally-mobile or not, can benefit from ‘internationalised’ higher education communities.
