Shipping frequently passes through population dense areas, for example from sea-going vessels in port, service vessels in port, or inland shipping. There is a requirement to assess the quantity of exhaust gas emissions from these situations in order to estimate the impact on the environment and human health. Ship’s engines commonly experience transient or part loading as a ship manoeuvres, or operates at reduced speed due to imposed restrictions. These varying conditions can produce quite different quantities of emissions compared to steady-state conditions. To replicate this transient and partial engine loading, and the associated exhaust gas emissions, a time-domain simulator has been developed which is capable of reproducing voyage scenarios. This allows the investigation and modelling of emissions on the environment from a varying or partly loaded engine, leading to voyage optimisation strategies which result in minimised exhaust gas emissions. This paper considers the under pinning rationale, applications and analysis with the developed ship manoeuvring simulator, with specific focus on the implications for calculating exhaust gas emissions under transient and part-loading.
