Abstract

Eye movements were recorded whilst older drivers and expert drivers drove along the three adjacent built-up areas in the North East of England, Metro Centre, Dunston and Wickham. An analysis of the drivers’ rear view mirror inspection, gaze locations and scan paths was performed. The study aimed to identify the different visual scanning behaviour at signalised junctions between older drivers and expert drivers at an attempt to provide insight into the design and development of intelligent driver support systems. The results from the rear view mirror inspection indicates that older drivers do not use the mirror as often as expert drivers before manoeuvres. It is also found that older drivers tend to have a smaller horizontal spread of scanning and bypass areas where oncoming traffic is located at junctions.
