Notes: This paper, written primarily by the first author assisted by an international team, is the result of extensive collaboration within the Commission on Visualization of the International Cartographic Association which was asked to "develop new paradigms or new concepts for research". The result is a research agenda for the developing field of 'geo-visualization'. Although not ISI-cited, the journal is a world-leading publication in the field of GIS and mapping. It has a wide impact on the research community in this area and this paper, along with others in this special issue volume, has been cited many times.
